O'Neills Inn
A guesthouse above a Victorian pub across from Trinity College in Dublin
The O'Neill family has been running this appropriately dark, woodsy, and Victorian pub since it opened in 1885 across the street from the hallowed grounds of Trinity College.
The newer guest rooms upstairs are simple but comfy, with plain, homey furnishings and private bathrooms. No one would accuse them of being fancy, frilly, or overly large—but at around €70 for a double room in such a primo location, no one is complaining, either. What's more, the rates include breakfast (not in the pub, but in a bright breakfast room up on the first floor).
It gets a star rating from me not so much for what it is in teh abstract (it's pretty plain) but for being the best in its category—the nicest, quietest of the pub guesthouses.
Unfortunately, noise can be a bit of an issue for light sleepers—not so much from the pub, ironically, but from the busy road out front and the DART train tracks out back. Bring ear plugs just in case.
There's also a two-room suite avaiable, and a family room for four.
