Munich's best splurge is one of Europe's grand old hotels, built in 1858 for Maximilian II to accommodate the overflow of guests from his nearby Residenz palace. In other words: this was the official Imperial guest house.

Today's clientele includes heads of state, businessmen, and discerning travelers who appreciate the superbly discreet service, constantly renovated rooms, rooftop pool, bevy of fine restaurants, boutique shops, posh accommodations, and proximity of shopping, theater, and galleries.

The least expensive rooms are in the uninteresting 1972 expansion wing. So as long as you're splurging, go for the modern digs in the original building.
