Egerton House Hotel
TK hotel in Brompton, London
$.
Just off Brompton Road, near the chicest boutiques and the shopping at Harrods, the red brick townhouse Egerton House, opened in 1990, offers Victorian comfort with a modern touch. Most of the rooms are fairly small, but are tastefully furnished in light tones with floral print fabrics, antique dressers, large windows, and half-testers over most beds in the "deluxe" and "luxury" categories (the rooms to go for). The largest "luxury" room with its four-poster bed is set aside as the honeymoon suite. Most accommodations overlook the grassy quiet and Victorian redbrick of Egerton Gardens. There's 24-hour room service, and a drawing room off the entrance with an honesty bar. The Egerton just bought the building next door, with garden views, and should begin expanding into it soon.
For a few dozen more pounds, you might opt to stay in one of the elegantly posh suites at the Egerton's sister hotel, The Franklin ([tel] 020/7584-5533, fax 020/7584-5449), just a few blocks away at 28 Egerton Gardens, with high ceilings and garden-view rooms.
17 Egerton Terrace (off Brompton Rd., two blocks up from its fork with Cromwell Rd. and the V&A Museum). [tel] 800/473-9492 in the U.S.; 020/7589-2412 in the U.K. Fax: 415/332-4009 in the U.S.; 020/7584-6540 in the U.K. www.egertonhousehotel.co.uk. Tube: Knightsbridge or South Kensington. Rates: £180 ($300) standard double, £195 ($325) large double, £210 ($350) deluxe double, £250 ($417) luxury double. AE, DC, MC, V.
