Brown's Hotel (Mayfair)
Brown's Hotel
$$$$. Mayfair.
One of London's best afternoon teas is held in the Drawing Room of Brown's, a venerable 1837 favorite of writers (Agatha Christie's At Bertram's Hotel takes place at Brown's, and Rudyard Kipling finished The Jungle Book here), potentates (Napoleon III, Queen ), and presidents (Teddy Roosevelt stayed here while getting married). Rooms are modernized, but cover it well with a vaguely belle époque decor of inlaid wood furnishings, tapestry curtains, stuccoed grotesques on the ceilings, and the occasional canopy bed. The hotel is large, but the staff so discreetly accommodating and common rooms so classy you feel as if you're staying at a tiny boutique inn.
