The grand Barcelona painter and artist Antoni Tàpies i Puig, Marquess of Tàpies (1923–2012) created this foundation in 1984 to serve as a space for contemporary art exhibitons and lectures—and to preserve his own artistic legacy, housing more than 2,000 of his works. It opened in 1990.

He installed this collection in the former Montaner i Simón publishing house, an early Modernisme classic built in 1880–85 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner—adding (a bit controversially) a bird-nest of swirling metal filaments to the top of the facade as if it were being overshadowed by a cloud of barbed wire with a chair perched on top.

Art. What are you gonna do.

How long does the Fundació Antoni Tàpies take?

Planning your day: Don't get me wonrg, Tapies was a fine artist and important figure in 20th century Spanish painting, but really you don't have to visit.

Swing by to see the building, by all means, but only go inside (for maybe 20 minutes) if you have a museum pass (and it is therefore free) or are truly keen on modern art.
