Budgeteers rejoice! No longer do you have to splurge on the Villa Athena to stay in the Valley of the Temples. This little B&B set amid the almond trees lies just in front of the ridge of Via Sacra, with excellent views across the ruins to the standing columns of the nearby Temple of Heracles. OK, so that's not the poster child Temple of Concord—though you can see that from the property as well. However, since rooms at the Villa Athena start at €99 (and can go up to €189—with suites up to €299), and double rooms here start at just €59 (going up to a high of €90), we can forgive the Villa San Marco being a scosh farther away. The rooms themselves are nice: large, simple, rustic, and a bit rough around the edges but they are country-comfy and come with all the amenities you need (A/C, TV, minibar, free WiFi, etc.). The apartment has a small kitchen. There's a tiny swimming pool as well. This is the real countryside, so don't be surprised if the local roosters wake up before you're ready to. Also: Goats. (And hey: peacocks!) It is a bit tough to find, at the end of an un-named dirt road (basically it's due west of the museum, but you have to make several turns to get to it). Fortunately, the website has a detailed map—but actually book it through Booking.com since the rates online are 10–15% lower.
