Hotel Oriente

A funky little hotel of bungalows amid ancient gardens on Lipari, the capital of the Aeolian Islands of Sicily

This modern hotel is terminally plain without, but has loads of kitschy character inside—all that random stuff one would normally squirrel away in the attic or farm shed is nailed all over the walls of common spaces; the friendly owner calls it his Aeolian Folk Ethnography Museum.

Many of the rooms are in bungalows hidden amid the extensive shady gardens where guests breakfast. The spacious accommodations are fitted with contemporary furnishings, tile floors, modern baths, and orthopedic beds with tiny Liberty-style headboards to add a touch of class.

It's a block off the main drag on the way to the Necropolis—actually, the necropolis once spread all over this neighborhood, and tucked away behind some bungalows are weedy excavation pits; 144 sarcophagi were found under this property alone.

They also offer discounts for seniors and families of more than four.
