When my family first moved to Rome in the mid-1980s, our household luggage sat on a Brooklyn dock for months (some kind of longshoreman's strike).
All we had were the proverbial shirts on our backs—plus a few spares in the suitcases we brought on the plane. Rather than hit the Via de' Condotti boutiques, the way the family in National Lampoon's European Vacation did, we ended up re-stocking our wardrobes here.
One pleasant side effect of this tactic was that we all ended up wearing, in effect, Italian hand-me-downs, which helped us start to blend in much more quickly than if we'd had access to our own American threads.

Planning your day: Just browsing? Figure on 20 minutes. Shopping? Well, you'll spend as long as that takes you. It's not a huge market (not like Porta Portese), so it won't be too long. Just be sure to visit Rome's cathedral around the corner when you're done.
Even though this isn't really a tourist market doesn't mean pickpockets don't work it. Watch out for your wallet.
