Of the three sister hotels on the Aventine Hill (including the Aventino and the pricier San Anselmo), the San Pio is the stylish hideaway—and where prices can dip as low as €84 per double in the slow winter season, though €120–€200 is more common year-round.
The Villa San Pio consists of two buildings bridged by a magnolia-shaded garden and solarium. Accommodation decor varies widely, some with tasteful modular furnishings on tile floors, others kitted out in grand 19th century style, all with excellent firm beds.
The choicest rooms are in the structure beyond the gardens, where especially up on the first floor you're most likely to find the best combination of reproduction furnishings, Persian rugs on hardwood floors, painted ceilings, and ultra-mod baths with Jacuzzis (or perhaps a claw-footed tub).
The roof terrace has splendid tranquil views that encompass the Aventine and mountains in the distance but somehow manage to visually ignore the rest of Rome.
The Aventine Hill is an almost preternaturally quiet oasis of villas, leafy gardens, and residential blocks—tucked between the Circus Maximus, the Palatine, and the Baths of Caracalla, yet a world away from the chaos and traffic of Rome all around. Tourists rarely venture here, which is a shame, since its packed with several fine antique churches, some lovely city panoramas, and a few rarely visited ancient sights.

In January, 2011, Rome began charging a hotel bed tax. This is the city's doing, and sadly it is not a scam.
The following tax rates are per person, per night for all guests over the age of 10 and can be charged for stays of up to 10 days:
So a couple staying three nights in a four-star room would pay an extra €18.
Some hotels have begun folding this tax into their quoted rates; others tack it on when you go to check out, so be prepared.
