Castel Nuovo

The "New Castle" in Naples was built in the 1200s

the Castello Nuovo, or Maschio Angioino, in NaplesThough the core Maschio Angioino, or Angevin Dungeon, was built in the 13th century, the grand entrance arch wedged between two massive 15th-century bastions is pure Renaissance.

This unique adaptation of a triumphal arch was grafted onto the castle to commemorate Alfonso I of Aragon's arrival in the city in 1443.

The highlights inside—not stellar, but interesting—are the statues and frescoes from the 14th and 15th century in the Cappella Palatina; a middling collection of paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries; and the huge Sala dei Baroni, the grand hall where Naples' City Council still meets.
