The name may be a bit of wishful thinking, but this large, clean budget standby is just 200 feet from the train station (and a 10-minute tram ride from the ferry docks), and therefore is, indeed, ideal if you plan on lots of day trips. It's also a haven of quality and security among many seedy hotels in an often squalid area.
It's been family-run for 50 years, and cares about the little things: private baths in the rooms, free WiFi in the bar/lounge area.
Some of the tile floors are fantastically patterned, the richly-colored walls decorated with simple stucco elements lending it an air of class, and while most of the furniture is modular, some of the newest is quite stylish, especially the elegant bent-iron bedsteads.
Several rooms have terraces on the courtyard—and as a bonus are much quieter than those fronting traffic-choked Piazza Garibaldi.
The budget guidebooks are well aware of this place, so book in advance.
