In 2002, rising rents forced the kindly owner of this venerable inn (established in the 19th century) to move up the block into the piano nobile of a neighboring 15th-century palazzo.
She definitely traded up.
Incredible frescoes dating from 17th century and later decorate every ceiling but one tiny single, as well as many of the walls.
(Actually, virtually all the walls were painted, but the yahoos of a previous age whitewashed over them and the hotel could afford to uncover only a few of them for the time-being.)
When I visited, the workers were painting the trim, wiping off the terracotta tile floors, and finishing up installing the inlaid marble baths and period-style furnishings.
This proud old Florence hostelry promises to become, once again, one of the most sought-after little hotels in Florence.
