YOU DO NOT have to be a world-class athelete or sports commentator to go to the Olympic Games. You just need to reserve some tickets, find a place to stay, and book a cheap airfare.
I've been reading some newspaper reports about how hard it is to get to the Games and that hotels are already sold out. Poppycock.
I'm writing this on Nov 7, 2005, I just spent the weekend checking things out, and you know what? You can still get tickets for every single Oympic event—provided you don't insist upon necessarily attending a medals match, final heat, or women's figure skating (men's and pairs skating are still on tap, though).
What's more, there are literally thousands of beds still available—for as little as $60 a night for two people—across Piemonte. And that includes places to stay in the host city of Turin itself (where the ceremonies and all arena events involving ice skates are being held) as well as in the mountain resort villages and towns where the skiing, bobsledding, and other Alpine events are taking place.
You just have to know how to find them.
Step by Step
Unlike other trips, where you usually start with plane tickets, for the Olympic Games there's a distinct order in which you need to book things—and book them soon! This is one trip where waiting until the last minute is not going to snag you a bargain. The longer you put it off, the more events will sell out and the fewer beds will be available.
Start with the admission tickets, since what you can get will affect when you go. Click on each step below for details, tips, and resources.
