I was quite cross a few years ago to find that the owners had decided to renovate this formely super-cheap standby with the single best location in Florence (right across from the Duomo) into three-star status—and more than double the prices in the process.
The rooms at the Bigallo are boringly modular modern now—comfy but nothing to write home about.
However, in the location competition, it still wins for being located right on the corner of Piazza del Duomo, above the Loggia del Bigallo .
If you get one of the few rooms facing the Duomo, you’ll have a view like no other, practically within poking distance of Giotto’s bell tower.
Just because this is a traffic-free zone doesn’t mean you won’t still get some of the significant pedestrian noise that drifts up from the cobbled street below—this is the city’s most tourist-trammeled intersection. This amazing locaion does have its price.
They renovated this place to bring it in line with their other three hotels, including, a few blocks away on Via delle Oche and with side views of this living postcard, the quieter Hotel de' Lanzi.
