One sign of an otherwise unremarkable trattoria truly favored by the locals: people actually lining up to wait for it to open.
The old tall, vaulted rooms of La Casalinga open into blandly modern ones, heritage of an expansion several years back that sucked the spirit out of the place—though the the home cooking implied by its name (which means "The Housewife") is still some of the most genuine in town.
It's tough to spend more than $20 here—though if you order both a steak secondo and wine, you might be pushing $30—so feel free to order anything a la carte, be it ribollita (hearty tuscan bean soup thickened with day-old bread), rich tortellini al sugo di coniglio (in a rabbit ragú), or the excellent pasta della nonna (short, hollow pasta in a sauce of tomatoes, sausage, and onions).
Don't expect anything fancy in the secondi department either, just solid favorites like bollito misto (a mix of boiled meats with green sauce), trippa alla Fiorentina,, galletto ruspante al forno (half a young oven-baked chicken), polpette al forno (giant baked meatballs) or faraona arrosto (roast guinea fowl).
The starving artists and local artisans have been all but driven out by the tourist hordes, but if you want to stuff yourself on huge portions of Oltrarno workman's food, this is the place to come.
