Tucked away in a stone courtyard beyond a medieval double gate is Monte San Giuliano, serving some of the best food in Erice. It’s perhaps a hair below the Moderno in quality, but its considerably lower prices and terrace setting make it stand out.
Book ahead for a seat on the walled flagstone terrace to enjoy their pasta con sarde, busiati S. Giuliano (in an almond pesto with tomatoes, eggplant, and pecorino added), or the ubiquitous cuscus alla Trapanese (doused in fish broth and ladled with the meat of various white fish).
Follow it up with pescespada al salmorgiano (swordfish with marjoram), or a zainetto dello chef (beef rolled around tomatoes, mozzarella, and eggplant then roasted).
