Tuna steak with tomatoes, capers, and olives at La Foglia.
"The Leaf" has a vegetarian slant toward delicious soups and veggie concoctions, but Nicoletta and her artist husband Beppe (and their daughter Luciana) also serve basic meat and fish dishes.
The decor seems torn between South Seas and Sicilian peasant, and rather than hand you a menu, Beppe will amble over in his Panama hat to give you the "panorama" of what's available today.
The soups may be funghi (mushroom), lenticchie (lentils), or broccoli.
Pastas like tagliolini (eggless tagliatelle) or ravioli come in sauces of burro e salvia (butter and sage), ripe tomatoes, alle verdure (mixed chopped veggies), or fish (only on the tagliolini).
For secondo you can get a huge mixed salad or verdure alla griglia (eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms, and various other local vegetables grilled), pescespada arrosto alla mattalotta (swordfish with tomatoes, capers, and olives—also available in tonno, or tuna form), grilled veal or pork, or sarde al beccafico alla catanese (large sardines split, cleaned, and sandwiched around a frittata of egg and cheese).
