Where to stay in Palermo, Sicily

This favorite of Italian actors and writers (including Nobelist Dario Fo) has been family-run since 1921.

As of 1998 everything is brand new, from the sparkling white tile floors to the modern wood veneer and white lacquer furniture units. Almost all accommodations are comfortably large and the beds are nice and firm. And it's cheap, cheap, cheap.

The downsides to this excellent central choice are that the paint and lacquer is chipping in spots, and with the city's major thoroughfare just a narrow block away, there is some background traffic noise mixed with those Palermo sirens—but at least it isn't right under your balcony. Ask for an inside room if noise is an issue.
