The place to stay in the absolute center of Palermo, Sicily

Palermo's best splurge is also one of its most central inns, a 17th-century palazzo converted to a hotel in 1892, modernized by the Best Western group in the 1990s, and now part of a luxe Sicilian chain.

Furnishings are mostly discreetly functional and modern, with a few period or Empire antiques and Oriental rugs to liven up the decor. Most doubles are medium-sized, while spacious suites come with contemporary wood furnishings and fainting couches. All the baths are brand new with built-in hairdryers.

The quietest rooms are on the cortile or side streets, but the double glazing on the front windows block traffic noise fairly efficiently, plus on the first and second floor these Corso-side rooms have balconies with askance views of the Quattro Canti.

The top floor breakfast room has a vista over Palermo rooftops to Monte Pellegrino.
