Goethe dallied perhaps longer than he wanted to in Malcesine just up the lake a ways, but he also enjoyed Bardolino, which has been famous since Roman times for its light red wine, celebrated at the little local Museo del Vino (Museum of Wine).

The 12th-century Chiesa di San Severo has some great—if much faded—13th century frescoes, including scenesof the Apocalypse.
The lovely but simple Pieve di San Zeno was built in the early 9th-century, and also retains some fresco scraps.

Verona is the closest major city, where you can catch one of the 2–3 buses per hour (tel. +39-045-805-7911, www.atv.verona.it) to Bardolino (60–70 min.). Some of same bus lines connect Bardolino hourly with Malcesine (50 min.) and Riva del Garda (70–75 min.).
If you don't take a tour or have a rental car (recommended), the easiest way is by bus (www.atv.verona.it for the eastern shore) or—less frequently but far, far more scenically—by boat (www.navigazionelaghi.it).
