In 1997, when Richard Branson reopened this long-defunct hotel in an ornate 12th century palazzo, he set his clientele precedent by having Placido Domingo as the first guest.
Though it recently changed names from Palazzo Sasso to Palazzo Avino, it has remained a consistent five-star fave for rooms layered with 17th and 19th century antiques, Vietri tile floors, and Frette and Bulgari appointments.
As for the room itself: Sea view, sea view, sea view. Don't settle for anything less, and don't bother with the expense of staying here if you can't get one. (Also note that you get just as lovely views from your private terrace in a Superior Junior Suite for a half the cost of a full suite.)
Chef Pino Lavarra's international nouvelle cuisine has snapped up double Michelin stars for the Rossellinis restaurant.
Even the gym and heated pool come with sweeping views (the pool from an underwater window), though for the best panoramas hit the rooftop solarium with its twin Jacuzzis.
