Ayutthaya
The ancient capital of Siam
Twenty-first century Indochina may revolve around Bangkok, but back in the days of Siam the capital city was Ayuthaya, the core of which occupies on a large river island, now largely restored and protected as a national historic park.
This is about as close as you can get to wandering around the great cities of ancient Siam, a vast complex of wats, temples, and buildings dating back to the period which, in the West, constituted the Middle Ages (from about 1300 until the city was sacked by Burma in 1767).
