When I needed to house a dozen Boy Scouts and their leaders on a trip to London, I picked this classic hostel mere blocks from St. Pauls and the Millennium Bridge across the Thames.

For more than a century, it housed in what served St. Paul's as a school for choirboys, and there is still some of their old schoolboy graffitti on the wood-paneled walls.

There are 213 achingly functional bunk beds, most in rooms with 4 to 6 beds each (four have eight beds, and there is one room with 10 beds and another with 11 for groups).

There are also private rooms—same setup, but with just one to three beds each.

Dorm beds run from £16 to £21, private rooms from £45, and family rooms from £49.

The dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is fully licensed (which means you can get wine and beer).
