The Harrington Apartments ★★★
A Kensington Hotel with remarkably inexpensive apartments and an amazing Penthouse flat
These forty self-catering apartments two blocks south of Cromwell Road in Kensington are an excellent value in a pricey neighborhood.
The flats were fairly posh when they first opened, but are definitely showing their age—especialy the tired baths, some of which can be cramped.
Still, if you don't come expecting a luxury hotel but a bargain flat with limited services in a good Kensington location, and you should be happy.
The apartments vary widely, form basic and simple (and small) to a bit more luxe—particularly the light-filled penthouse.
I'd avoid the basement rooms—musty, no windows (just a frosted strip by the ceiling for daylight), and being under the ground-floor restaurant means it can stay noisy late.
The kitchenettes are well-stocked with gear, but very little in the way of starter food, so you'll have to hit the Waitrose supermarket on Cromwell Rd (or the Tesco Express on Gloucester) for tea bags and such.
There's a small laundry room in the basement.

VRBO stands for "Vacation Rentals By Owner," a worldwide virtual classifieds section devoted to villas, apartments, cottages, houses, and other places to lay your head fromas little as $400 per week in England. There are a stunning 33,761 properties available in England, 4,896 in Scotland, and 5,123 in Wales.
Though designed to allow villa and vacation home owners to rent to the public directly—ostensibly cutting out the extra costs involved in working through a middle-man rental agency—in my experience plenty of small-fry local rental agencies use it as well (not that there's anything wrong with renting through those folks; just wanted to let you know that not every property listed is truly direct from the owner).
