Egerton House Hotel ★★☆
Just off Brompton Road, near the chicest boutiques and the shopping at Harrods, the red brick townhouse Egerton House, opened in 1990, offers Victorian comfort with a modern touch.
The five-star Egerton House, between Harrods and the V&A, aims for that pampered private home feel of solicitous service, with afternoon tea in the lounge—and with just 28 rooms and a two-to-one staff to guest ratio, they usually manage to pull it off.
Routinely ranked among the top hotels in London by everyone from the masses at Tripadvisor to the editors at Condé Nast and Travel + Leisure, the Egerton has been a luxury hotel since 1990, and a five-star Red Carnation property since 2005 (though, ironically, these twin townhomes were home to the London Hostels Association from the 1940 until the 1980s).
Most of the rooms are fairly small, but are tastefully furnished in light tones with floral print fabrics and antique dressers mized with comfortable modern pieces. Go for a "deluxe" room category, or one of the four top-floor studio suites.
The Tudor-styled "Victoria & Albert Suite" with its four-poster bed is set aside as the honeymoon suite.
Most accommodations overlook the grassy quiet of Egerton Gardens or the interior garden.
There's 24-hour room service, and a drawing room off the entrance with an honesty bar.
