Duke's Hotel ★★★
Like staying at your own private upper crust St. James's club
The word is out on Duke's—which has won awards for the accommodations as well as for the bar stuffed with leather chairs and stocked with fine gins and vintage cognacs.
In London hotel terms, The Duke is relatively inexpensive for the level of style and pampering you get.
Most rooms—be they the superior doubles or the junior suites with sitting rooms—are smallish, but are kept elegantly simple to compensate, with built-in closets, granite marble baths, and antique writing desks.
Suites come with Empress-sized beds on which to romp, large sitting rooms, and vistas over the spires and skyscrapers of London.
The penthouse has the sweetest views, incorporating Big Ben, Parliament, and Westminster.
The new spa offers a marble steam room, small exercise room, and massage and beauty treatments.
This is traditionally quite the royal neighborhood: on one side is Charles' House, former home to the Queen Mother, and on another is Spencer House, home to the family of Princess Diana.
