Paul Gauguin
The Post-Impressionist who went native in the South Pacific
Gauguin (1848-1903) could never settle himself or his work, trying Brittany first, where he developed synthetism (merging the actual appearance of the subject, the artist’s own feeling about it, and the formal considerations of form and color—often with black outlines around solid colors), and later hopping around the South Pacific, where he was inspired by local styles and colors.
