Toghill house actually began life as an inn, built in 1691 as a "resting house" for monks and pilgrims traveling between the abbeys at Glastonbury and Malmesbury (and you can still see the ruts of the old coaching road between Bristol and London on the property).

It became a farm in 1861, and the Bishop family still raises sheep, horses, chickens, and Shetland ponies here in addition to running it as a bed and breakfast just a five-minute drive from Bath at the edge of the Cotswolds.

The bedrooms—spread between the old farmhouse and a re-purposed barn—vary widely, some with half-testers or canopy beds, other with raw stone walls or richly patterned tapestries. Some in the barn have low beams, so tall should watch their heads.

There's a great Full English breakfast, free (if spotty) WiFi, and a warm welcome from the hosts and their pets.
