This is the jewel of the park system, 1,800 acres of urban nature that we locals often call \u201cValley Green.\u201d The wide, gravelly, wooded trail rises and falls for 5.3 miles. Rocks rise on your left, the wide Wissahickon (Lenape Indian for \u201ccatfish creek\u201d) flows below to the right. Stop to spot owls, titmice, woodpeckers (five species nest here), bluebirds, cardinals, nuthatches, goldfinches, and plenty of mallards. Note the 19th-century stone bridges, the many 1930s-era WPA-built shelters, and the Thomas Mill Road covered bridge (built in 1737), which has its own mailbox for letters of appreciation for the bridge or Valley Green in general.
