Arriving in Florence, in brief
By train
Trains to Florence pull into Stazione Firenze-Santa Maria Novella (don't accidentally get off in suburban stations Firenze-Rifredi or Firenze-Campo di Marte).
By car
Arriving by car is frustrating as ,any streets in the historic center are closed to traffic entirely, most others are officially open only to card-carrying locals or merchants (or to tourists dropping off luggage at their hotels—that's you), and nearly all are annoyingly one-way. Best to get rid of your car as fast as possible. Parking is cheapest in the city-run parterre lot. ![]()
By plane
Bus 62 shuttles passengers every 20 minutes between the train station and Amerigo Vespucci Airport, 3 miles northwest of town. Mainly national and a few continental flights land at Florence's airport. ![]()
By bus
The main bus station in Florence is just across the piazza from the train station at Via S. Caterina da Siena 17R.
Most flights from Europe land at Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport, 60 miles and an hour's shuttle train ride from Florence. ![]()
By ship
Cruise ships can't get anywhere near landlocked Florence, so they usually put in at the port of Livorno, on the Tuscan coast just south of Pisa, about 90–120 minutes away by train or private transfer.
