Slovenia

dscn0028.jpg

Piranske Soline, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Sea salt from the 1,200-year-old saltpans of Sečovlje and Strunjan—the only pans along the entire Gulf of Trieste or Istrian Peninsula to have survived to today, just south of Porotrož—being sold in the Piranske Soline boutique on Lubljana's Mestni trg (www.soline.si). There's an old Slovenian saying: "Sol je morje, ki ni moglo nazaj na nebo," which means <<Salt is that part of the sea which could not return to the sky.>> Beyond the poetry, I can attest that the stuff does have curative powers. I dumped a handful of it into a hot bath after getting home from a 100-mile bike trip, and boy did it go a long way to soothing those muscles. (Also, the cat couldn't stop licking my arm after I got out of the tub.)
